Inside: This frosted pinecone craft creates a beautiful decoration for winter. Goes perfectly with the book Penguin and Pinecone!

Adding white paint and glitter is a festive preschool winter pinecone craft! We call them “frosty pinecones”. We asked our preschoolers and their families to collect pinecones in their yards over the weekend. They brought a nice collection to school on Monday, so we had variety to choose from. This activity tied in nicely with the book “Penguin and Pinecone” by Salina Yoon. When finished, they made a nice display on our science shelf.

What you will need:

  • pinecones

Collecting the pinecones:

Before beginning this art project, we first explored our pinecone collection. As the children brought their pinecones to school, they placed them on our science shelf. We compared their sizes.

We noticed how each pinecone was a bit different, just like we are all different.

We read “Penguin and Pinecone” and talked about what being a good friend was.

The process:

Preschool Winter

Set the pinecones on a table with trays of white paint.

Brush the white paint on the pinecone.

Shake the glitter on the wet paint. (Tip: we place our glitter in small salt shakers as they are easier for small hands to hold and the holes a just the right size so the glitter comes out slowly.)

For this part you might want to first place the pine cone in some sort of tray to collect any glitter that does not stick.

You can see what otherwise might happen – glitter everywhere!

You could tie some yarn around the top if you want to hang it.
