Inside: Put together The Itsy Bitsy Spider circle time activity using visuals that keep toddlers and preschoolers engaged!
“How can I get my toddlers and young preschoolers engaged at circle time?”
I get this question often. And I get it! After years of dreading circle time, with children who just wanted to do anything but actually be there, I realized that they needed to actually be part of the activity.
I started using props and that made all the difference.
When we started our printables shop a few years ago, one of our first packets to be created included visuals to my favorite fingerplays. The Itsy Bitsy Spider is one of those, and we sing it all year long!
Our Favorite Fingerplays
So what are my students’ favorite fingerplays?
- The Itsy Bitsy Spider
- The Wheels on the Bus
- 5 Green and Speckled Frogs
- If You’re Happy and You Know It
- 5 Little Ducks
- Old MacDonald Had a Farm
I wanted a packet that included visual props for all of these fingerplays so that I could have them ready to go in my circle time box.
I asked my creative daughter, Rachel, if she could design them for me, and she did just that. (She creates all the printables for our shop!)
You can find all six of these fingerplays here: Song and Rhyme Visual Props Packet
I have them all in bags, stored in my circle time box, so I can pull them out at any time. (They’ve been a lifesaver when everything else isn’t working, I’ll tell you that!)
I show them all here (and how to put them together): Favorite Circle Time Activities

Supplies
- The Itsy Bitsy Spider printable from our Song and Rhymes Packet*
- White Cardstock (Heavy Paper)
- Laminator
- Laminating Sheets
- Jumbo Craft Sticks
- Self-Adhesive Magnetic Pieces or Velcro, (depending on the board you will be using)
*If you only want spiders props for your students to hold, we have a freebie on the website. However, I love having the entire set with the cloud, sun, spout and spiders.
- Make enough spider props so each child has one.
- Attach a jumbo craft stick to each laminated spider.
- Use wide packing tape to secure the spider to the craft stick.
Preparation
Print the props on cardstock (heavy paper). You will also want enough copies of a spider for the children to hold.
I like to then laminate each item for durability.
To use a magnetic board:
Place a magnetic piece on the back of each piece that the teacher will use.
Here is the portable magnetic board you see in my classroom.
To use a felt board:
Place a velcro piece on the back of each piece that the teacher will use. (Be mindful of the hook and loop – you will want to use what sticks to your felt board.)
To create the individual spider props for fingerplay:
Felt Board or Magnetic Board?
It’s really up to you and what you already have – either a felt board or a magnetic board.
The Warm Up
Before I begin any songs with props, I like to do a warm up to get the children listening.
I will tell them to hold their spiders up, and then we will tap various body parts – stomach, shoulder, neck, head, foot, etc.
The Activity
- Place the main set (spider, spout, rain, sun) on whatever type of board you are using
- Hand a spider prop to each child.
You can sing the words to the song or you can play a song and sing with it.
Lyrics:
The itsy bitsy spider crawled up the water spout.
Down came the rain, and washed the spider out.
Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain, and the itsy bitsy spider went up the spout again.
Music (on Spotify):
- The Itsy Bitsy Spider (Itsy Bitsy Spider Kids)
- The Itsy Bitsy Spider (Go Fish)
Extension
I will then invited each child to come up, one by one, to slide their spider down the spout.
Other spider activities:
- Spider Cutting Cards
- Itsy Bitsy Spider Block Center
- Tape Resist Spider Web
- Golf Ball Painted Spider Webs
- Itsy Bitsy Spider Puppet
- Spider Counting Cards
- Egg Carton Spider Craft
