Inside: This ladybug art is a fun way to work on counting skills during your spring theme! Make a simple number line and invite your preschoolers to count the legs before attaching them.

During our nature camp, our preschoolers had fun putting together this simple ladybug art. I love to add some learning to our activities, so we did some counting while putting the ladybugs together. My inspiration for this activity came from this post.

Supplies

  • red paper plate
  • black tempera paint
  • circle stamp
  • black yarn
  • googly eyes
  • black construction paper
  • Scotch tape
  • white glue

Ladybug Craft

Preparation

Before inviting the preschoolers to create their ladybugs, I cut the paper plates in half, cut circles from the black construction paper, and cut the yarn into separate pieces.

I poured black tempera paint into individual dishes and we used a circle stamp to make black spots on the red plate.

Ladybug Craft

Step One

Take the circle stamp, dip it into the black paint, and create black circles on the half red plate.

Set aside to dry.

While our black spots were drying, we enjoyed other ladybug activities. We even had a ladybug party in the dramatics area!

Step Two

Once the black spots are dry, it’s time to assemble the ladybug!

I made a number line from 1 to 6 and had the preschoolers place a piece of yarn on each number. This was a great way to work on their counting skills along with 1:1 correspondence.

They turned their plates upside down and arranged the 6 pieces of yarn so that they hung off the straight edge of the plate. Once in place, the yarn pieces were secured with Scotch tape.

The black construction paper heads were glued onto the plate, and then the google eyes were glued on top of them.

The antennae were then glued above the eyes.

And there they are!

So cute! Looks like real kid art, not adult art. I love the “ladybug party” table display you have, too!
