Inside: One of our February art activities is this easy Valentine’s craft with foil. Seriously, you just need tin foil and my easy homemade paint (scroll down to get the recipe). That’s it!

Our toddler and preschoolers have had so much fun creating Valentine’s over the years. You might recall:

  • Hearts made with a salad spinner
  • Hearts made with felt and buttons
  • Hearts made with cardboard

We are excited to add these foil Valentine’s hearts to the collection! An easy way to work on fine motor skills while using Q-Tips!

Foil Valentines Hearts

What you will need for this easy Valentine’s Craft:

  • Tinfoil
  • Our homemade paint (scroll down for recipe)

Foil Valentines Hearts

Getting started:

  • Mix as many colors of paint as you wish to use
  • Cut tinfoil into heart shapes

Then, start painting on the foil! What I love about this activity is the texture. The foil is slippery, and yet the creases create bumps. I noticed the preschoolers enjoyed running their fingers over the creases before applying paint. Some sensory fun added to this Valentine’s art activity!

Notice that we chose to have them apply paint with Q-tips?

We are always working on getting the hands and fingers ready to write.

Using Q-tips forces the use of just the finger in a tripod grasp.

You can even break the Q-tip to make it shorter, keeping the fingers from wrapping around the stick.

Another plus to this activity is that it allows some color mixing exploration.

Once our foil Valentine’s hearts were thoroughly dry, I gently poked a hole at the top of each one and hung them in our classroom window. I love how the light hits them!

Our homemade paint recipe that was used for this activity:

(Mix up this amount for each color you will be using.)

  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • Liquid watercolor
  • Dish detergent

Combine flour and salt in a small container.

Slowly add liquid watercolors until you get a thin paste.

Make sure to keep stirring until it is smooth.

Squirt a small amount of dish detergent into the mixture. (This helps keep the paint from flaking off the foil, although there still might be a bit of flaking depending on how it’s handled.)

They’re absolutely beautiful, Sheryl! All that shine and shimmer. I love it! Thanks for the mention too! The only reason mine look so “neat” is that I made them myself! The Hooligans’ looked much like yours, which in all honesty, are far more personal and heart warming than a grown up’s version. 🙂

What’s not to like if your 2 or 3 or 4…? It’s shiny, full of sparkles, and fun to make! Cute!

    Sheryl,
How much glue did it take to get the heavier beads to stay on?? That looks like a great project to do with my little ones.
    Thanks 🙂

Hi Michelle – What really helped adhere the heavier beads was the Modge Podge. Otherwise, I think they would’ve fallen off.
