Inside: Work on fine motor development with this Christmas dot sticker ornament activity for toddlers. Makes a fun ornament for their gift bag, too!
During a season that can be busier than usual, it’s nice to find a simple no-mess activity.
While it is simple, it still builds important fine motor skills as little fingers work hard to remove stickers from their backings, pressing them on to the ornaments.
We even laminated our ornaments so the children could take them home to hang on their trees.
A nice addition to the Christmas theme!

Christmas Dot Sticker Ornament Activity for Toddlers
I love using dot stickers with my two and three year olds.
Actually, our entire preschool uses dot stickers for many different activities!
You can get them in different colors so they are perfect for color sorting activities.
We’ve used ours at the art table, the easel, and at the writing table.
Some examples of how we have used dot stickers:

- Butterfly Art Using Stickers and Watercolors

Supplies
For this activity, you will need a paper ornament. You can create your own or you can use the one we did. It is part of our winter tracing pages in our Winter Fine Motor Packet.
You will also need:
- Adult scissors to cut out the ornaments (or child scissors if your preschoolers are cutting them out – see below)
- Hole punch
- Circle stickers
- Laminator and laminating sheets (optional)
Have Older Preschoolers Cut Their Own Ornaments
This activity can be modified for older preschoolers by having them cut out their ornament, not a teacher. I highly encourage teachers of older preschoolers to have their students do the cutting, as it works on important cutting skills. This adds even more fine motor to the activity.

Preparation
If using the ornament printable, copy on to heavy cardstock paper.
For toddlers and young preschoolers, cut out the ornaments ahead of time.
For older preschoolers who are working on cutting skills, do not cut out ahead of time. That will be their job.
Cut the stickers into smaller strips so they are easier to handle.

Set Up
At the time of the activity, give each child an ornament and strips of stickers.
If you are teaching older preschoolers, include scissors.
The Activity
Tell your students that they will be removing the stickers, one at a time, from the backing and then pressing them on to the ornament.

Two year olds might need help removing the stickers from the backing.
I model how to bend the backing a bit and then pinching the sticker to lift it away from the backing.
Usually once they are shown a few times, they get the hang of it.

In the photos I used smaller circle stickers.
This year I will be using slightly larger one inch circle stickers. They will be easier to handle.

When finished, I laminated the ornaments, but this is optional.
Punch a hole in the top of the ornament and create a loop with yarn or ribbon.

Using the Ornament from the Winter Dot Packet
Another option is to use the ornament from our Winter Dot Packet.
The circles are already on the paper, so the children are working on 1:1 correspondence while placing one sticker on each circle.
Since it is black and white, the children can also decorate them with markers or crayons.
