St. Patrick’s Day Green Light Table

Inside: Put together a St. Patrick’s Day green light table activity for your toddlers and preschoolers for fun color exploration!

We love exploring color on the light table.

The light table is one of the many hands-on centers in all of our classrooms, from toddlers to pre-kindergarten.

Some examples of previous light table activities:

For this particular activity I wanted to focus on the color green, since it’s our St. Patrick’s Day featured color.

St. Patrick’s Day Green Light Table Activity

During our St. Patrick’s Day theme, we do a lot of green color exploration, such as:

• Mixing Blue and Yellow Playdough
• Mixing Blue and Yellow on Bubble Wrap
• Mixing Blue and Yellow on Paper

This time, I decided to take it to the light table!

Supplies

For our green light table, I walked around our storage room and collected anything that was translucent green:

• Green color paddle
• Green tray
• Green window blocks
• Green translucent blocks
• Green containers
• Green tongs

I also added a few non-translucent pieces such as a green juice cap and a green necklace.

I displayed a page from a color book that focused on the color green, too.

What you add to your green light table depends on what you have available. Go through your supplies – you might be surprised what you will find!

Set Up

Setting up a light table is easy. Simply place everything on the table! It will be moved around as soon as the children become involved.

Invitation to Play

Light tables don’t usually need much of an introduction.

You could ask the children what color are all the objects on the table?

What’s the biggest item?

The smallest?

Fine Motor

I often add tongs or scoops to a light table activity to encourage more fine motor.

The children in this activity chose what they wanted to pick up and move to a different spot.

I also added a magnifying glass in case the children wanted to examine anything up close.

How to Modify this for Older Children

Hide green items around the room and invite the children to find them and then put them on the light table!

How to Use This Activity Any Time of the Year

This does not need to be a St. Patrick’s Day activity. You can do color exploration any time of the year. Focus on different colors each time!
