Inside: Build counting skills with a fun preschool frog art activity! After painting the pieces, place the frogs on a timeline to count and then glue onto the log. Free printables included!
I love that math can happen just about anywhere, including the art table.
We had so much fun with our ladybug craft and when we made our spiders.
I created a free printable log and 5 frogs and invited the children to paint and assemble their frogs and logs while also counting from 1-5.
How to Put Together a Frog Art Activity that Builds Counting Skills
Before starting this activity, I pulled out my 5 Green Speckled Frogs set and we counting while singing one of our favorite finger plays. I then gathered my materials for this 2-step frog art activity.
What we used:
- Green tempera paint
- Brown tempera paint
- White glue
- Numbers 1-5 handwritten on a strip of paper
- Frogs and log printable (scroll down to find the link to the free printable)

Step 1: Paint the Frogs and Log
First, make a copy of the frogs and log printable. I printed mine on heavy paper (card stock).
Make enough copies for each child.
(Note: There is also a large frog in the frogs and log packet. Save this to use at the writing table or to make our cute frog puppets.)
Allow to thoroughly dry and then cut each piece out.
Step 2: Count the Frogs and Place them on Log
Take a strip of paper (I had some sentence strips tucked away in a drawer) and write the numbers 1 through 5 with some space in between each number.
Invite your child to place 1 frog on each number.
As an extra challenge, invite the child to call out each number while placing the frog on top of it.
Have a small container of white glue available with a paintbrush.
After counting each frog using the number line, glue the frogs onto the log.
These types of activities are wonderful examples of hands-on learning.
Rather than using flashcards and worksheets, toddlers and preschoolers are learning to count at the art table, while putting together the 5 frogs on a log.
Let the glue dry completely.
Then, give the children their frogs on the log during circle time.
Tell them they are going to count the frogs. Together, count each frog out loud while pointing to each frog.
Another Way to Use this Frog Art Activity
Instead of gluing the frogs permanently to the log, place velcro pieces on the log and on each frog, so that the frogs can be removed.
While singing Five Green and Speckled Frogs, pull a frog off the log, one by one, until there are no frogs left.
