Inside: Looking for a super simple toddler Mother’s Day gift? Paint a flower canvas piece, add the child’s photo and a magnet, and you have a sweet keepsake for mom!
I love those moments when I am shopping for nothing in particular, and there is the perfect item for a future activity.
Yep, that was me in March.
I was minding my own business, relaxing and seeing what was out there, and I found small canvas pieces in the shape of flowers.
And right then I knew how I’d use them.
As a keepsake Mother’s Day Gift.
In the past we’ve made candle holders and bath salts, but this year I wanted something more personal.
That included the children’s picture, with a magnet so it could stick to the refrigerator.
This year’s toddler Mother’s Day gift is so easy and fun and would also be perfect for any special person on any occasion!
Toddler Mother’s Day Gift: Photo Flower Magnet
What we used:
- Canvas flower shapes (Note: As of April 2023, these are not available. They do have these slightly larger flowers, or you can use hearts instead, as we did in 2022.)
- Your choice of paint (we used tempera paint)
- Photo of child, cut into a circle
- Magnetic tape
This is optional, but you can also seal the top of the magnet with Modge Podge or some sort of spray sealer. If you do this, first glue the photo on the canvas. Then, apply the sealer. Put the magnet on after everything is dry.

There really aren’t many steps to this activity, which is why it’s perfect for toddlers.
I had a few different colors of paint available and invited them to paint their flowers.
I love how colorful they turned out!
After letting the canvas flowers dry thoroughly, I cut pieces of the magnetic strip and pressed them on the backs of each one.
Note how I wrote their name and the year.
That’s the mama coming out of me. I have a drawer filled with gifts my children made for me when they were younger, and so many of them do not have the date on them.
You’d think you’d have an idea of when they were made, but nope.
I haven’t a clue.
And some don’t even have my children’s names on them, so I’m really at a loss as to who made them and when.
(I still cherish them with all my heart, though.)
Wrapping the Gifts
I pulled out my assortment of tissue paper and let the children select which colors they wanted to wrap their flower magnets in.
I love to have them involved in each process!
Those of you who have been reading my blog for awhile know how much I love using Kraft bags as gift holders.
I’ve used them for:
This time I had our toddlers use a bubble paint technique to color white bags.
I love how they turned out!
We placed the magnet, wrapped in tissue paper, inside the gift bags.
See how we made these bags here: Colorful Mother’s Day Gift Wrap
And then we added a homemade card.
I even created a printable to use for this card. All you need to do is have your toddlers decorate the fronts!
