Inside: Grab some paper tubes for this fun and easy toddler shapes activity that focuses on circles!

Your toddler is ready for some simple art, but where to start? Toddler circle painting, of course!

This easy toddler shapes activity, using paper tubes, is a simple way to introduce toddlers to paint. In fact, this is one of the first art activities we do with our toddler class each September. The paper tube fits easily in their small hands and it adds some distance between the paint and the hands, important for some toddlers who are not yet used to the feeling of paint. Our goal for our toddler’s first art is to make them feel comfortable. You can read more about how we set up our art activities for our toddlers here.

So, gather a paper tube, some paint, and watch your toddler’s first art experience come to life!

Materials needed for this easy toddler shapes activity:

  • paper tubes (if you are using long tubes, cut them smaller)
  • tempera paint
  • your choice of paper

Setting it up this easy toddler shapes activity:

  • Pour tempera paint into trays and add paper tubes.
  • Place paper beside the trays.
  • Invite the toddlers to press the tube into the paint and then onto the paper.

This is a wonderful first art activity because it uses motion, and toddlers love to move! The tube fits nicely in the palm of their hands, too.

And yes, some children might want to use them as telescopes. Love their imaginations!

That’s it! It’s truly that simple.

This is a great idea for young toddlers. I don’t consider 2’s and 3’s Toddlers as much as preschoolers (might be because the company I have worked for doesn’t classify 2’s as Toddlers, they are on curriculum at that point)…..I teach 12m to 20 months.
