Inside: Decorate using toddler Valentine’s Day hearts for the window. This simple art activity builds fine motor skills and adds lots of color to your classroom!

I love window art.

There’s just something about having colorful pieces displayed, especially in the winter when it feels a bit grey outside.

Also, it’s a fun way to display the children’s work!

We’ve done lots of window art in the past, including:

  • Stained Glass Christmas Trees
  • Watercolor Leaves
  • Spin-Art Apple Banner

This year I came up with an idea to make big watercolor hearts to hang in the window with very little prep.

Once the hearts are laminated, they are sturdy and hang well.

Let me show you!

Preparation

If you are cutting out your own hearts from tissue paper, make enough so that each child has at least one.

Pour watercolors into small containers, diluting to your desire.

Place trays on the art table and add a heart to each one.

Place the the containers in the center of the table so the children can decide what colors they want. Add droppers to each container.

Tip: Write the child’s name on the edge of the heart with a Sharpie before they begin.

Start Applying Paint

Squeeze watercolors from the container to the heart, dropping the paint on top.

If this is your children’s first time using droppers, show them how to squeeze the bulb when it’s in the container, filling it with paint.

Place the dropper above the heart and squeeze again to release the paint.

In my experience this can take a few tries, but once they get the hang of it, they will want to do this over and over again.

I prefer to start young children with the droppers that have a larger bulb, as they are often still squeezing with their palms and fingers.

Once they are three they are usually ready for medicine droppers or pipettes, which require a bit more coordination.

Rather than using their palms, they are pressing with their fingers.

Halfway through the school year, when about half of my students are three, I will place both droppers and pipettes on the table and let them choose.

When finished, drain the excess liquid and let them dry on the tray.

Turning the Hearts Into Window Decorations

Once the hearts are completely dry, laminate them individually.

Cut around the heart, leaving a bit of a margin.

Punch a hole in the top of the hearts and hang in the window using the suction cup hooks.
