You know all those plastic Easter eggs that you only use once a year, ON Easter day? Yeah, they seem to multiply, don’t they? And if you are a teacher who loves to save stuff (is there a teacher out there who doesn’t?), you want to know other ways to use them. So I’m going to show you an easy way we can teach toddlers colors with Easter eggs.
It’s really easy! But you knew I was going to say that, because I’m all about easy activities for toddlers.

Teach Toddlers Colors with Easter Eggs
Oh, how I love to invite our toddlers to learn in a playful way. Have you ever watched a toddler hold plastic Easter eggs? It’s like they are meant for those little hands.
This activity combines fine motor with color recognition and is just plain fun!
What you will need:
-
Plastic eggs
-
Light table or overhead projector (You don’t need fancy equipment! Consider making your own simple light table!)
Getting started:
It’s really this easy: place the eggs on the table and let the children do the rest!
Some fun ways to use this activity:
- Place all the eggs in a container beside the light table or projector. Invite your toddler to put a specific color of eggs on top of the light.
- Put all the eggs on top of the light source and have him remove one color, placing it back in the container.
- Hide the eggs around the room. Go on an egg hunt. As the eggs are found, they are placed on the light source.
- If your toddler knows simple counting, ask her to put 1 egg on the light source. Try 2. Try 3. Count as high as she is able.
- Use ladles to transport the eggs to and from the light source. Tongs are fun for older toddlers!
If you are using a light projector, enjoy working with what is shown on the wall or screen. Toddlers will want to walk up and touch what is being projected on that surface, not quite yet understanding that it is coming from what is on top of the projector.

That is a very cool effect Sheryl! I never thought of putting the eggs on the light! Might work well on the light table too!

Yes, I am planning on adding them to the light table with the 2’s tomorrow!

great ideas.
Just be wary with these plastic eggs. I know of a toddler who got one half stuck in his mouth. They are just the right size to seal off their mouth and airway and get stuck because his mother couldn’t fit her finger down the side to pop it out. Maybe consider punching a small hole in the end of each egg. And carefully watch those toddlers who may put them in their mouths.

Absolutely, Jane! They have plastic eggs with holes already drilled into them. If your child still puts things in her mouth, I’d suggest going with the jumbo-sized plastic eggs. Thank you for reading!
