Inside: This preschool Valentine’s Day craft is the perfect way to use recycled materials and loose parts. Let your children choose what they’d like to add to theirs!

I love using recyclables, and decided to use corrugated cardboard for this simple heart craft for preschoolers.

Corrugated cardboard can be found in a variety of product packaging.

In fact, every time I grab a coffee and they surround the cup with a corrugated cardboard sleeve, I know it can be reused for an art activity!

And so, I gathered cardboard and small colorful bits of this and that, and our preschoolers enjoyed making a colorful Valentine’s craft.

This also makes a great last-minute activity since it’s so simple to put together.

What you will need:

  • Corrugated cardboard

  • White glue

  • Your choice of small pieces

  • Ribbon

Assembling this Valentine’s craft:

Use some sort of heart template (I used a cookie cutter) and traced hearts onto the corrugated cardboard. Then, cut the hearts out and punch a hole near the top.

We had a bunch of small colored pieces that were leftover from a previous activity, so that’s what we used to adorn our cardboard hearts. However, you can use any small loose parts you happen to have in your home or classroom.

Even better, give the preschoolers a choice of different materials and see what they come up with!

The activity:

Place all the materials on a flat surface and squeeze glue onto the surface of the cardboard heart.

Note: preschoolers LOVE to squeeze glue. You might want to stand close and gently intervene before a puddle of glue happens.

Then, start adding the small pieces.

Notice how the fingertips work to transfer those small pieces. Yep, you know how I love to add extra fine motor in my activities!

When finished, let the glue dry thoroughly and string ribbon through the hole and tie.

They looked so nice hanging in our window!
