Inside: It’s easy to strengthen scissor skills with these summer cutting cards! Simply download the free printable for a nice and calm fine motor activity.

Summer is a great time to work on scissor skills with these fun sun themed cutting cards!

They are small so that they will fit more easily in young preschoolers’ hands and are a great way to build fine motor skills.

Plus, these cutting cards are a nice, calming activity that can be done during quiet time.

Setting up this scissor skills activity:

For those who are just learning how to use scissors, I suggest copying these cutting cards onto heavy (card stock) paper.

The heavier weight will be easier for the helper hand to hold while the working (dominant) hand is cutting.

If your children have had experience using scissors, regular weight paper is fine.

Directions:

After making copies of the printable, cut along the solid lines so that there are 4 separate cards.

Invite your children to start cutting at the bottom of the card, where the scissors symbols are, up along the dashed line, stopping at the sun.

For beginners, don’t stress about being precise when cutting on the lines. What’s most important is a proper scissors grasp. The thumb is in one hole, and the fingers are in the other. Make sure that the thumb is on top.

Once the cards are cut along the dashed lines, some children want to then cut those strips into smaller pieces.

(Tip: Provide a bowl or tray to catch the cut pieces.)

Older preschoolers can focus more on cutting directly on the lines.

Classroom: This would be a fun small groups activity! Simply make enough copies for each child in the group, along with trays or bowls for cutting.

Home: Set up a cutting station at the kitchen table to work on fine motor skills while also providing some quiet time.
