Props make a world of difference when interacting with toddlers and young preschoolers at circle time.

If you’ve been teaching this age group for awhile, you know what a challenge it can be to keep their attention.

I’ve found that giving them something to hold, something related to the activity, makes a big difference.

Since one of our themes in January includes snowmen, I just had to create some snowmen props.

These can easily be turned into snowman stick puppets that you and your students can hold, whether in the classroom or while virtual teaching.

Assembling the Printable Snowman Prop

What you will need:

  • Popsicle sticks or Jumbo Craft Sticks
  • Laminator
  • Scotch tape
  • Printable snowman prop (scroll down to find the link)
  • I suggest either printing these on heavy paper or laminating them for extra durability.Make enough copies so that you have one snowman for each student and yourself.Preparation:Cut out the desired amount of snowmen and gather your popsicle or jumbo craft sticks. After cutting them out, tape them to the top of a popsicle stick.

Using the Printable Snowman Props

Hold up one of the snowman sticks and tell the children that they will be getting their own stick to hold.

After giving each child one snowman stick, read a snowman book, recite a rhyme, or sing a snowman song. Make sure you are holding one, too!
While planning my circle times, I look for books, rhymes, and fingerplays.

Here are some ideas:

Teaching virtually?

I’ve found that props are even more important when teaching through a screen.

You can see how I use them in my online video snippets which are on my virtual teaching resource page.

I send my props home in a take-home packet that each child gets every two weeks.
