Inside: Learning about day and night can involve some fun activities with preschoolers. We explored books, sorting activities, a black and white sensory bin, and 2 fun art activities during this theme!

What happens in the daytime? What happens at night?

Our preschoolers love to talk about this. In fact, often when we read a story, they will notice if it’s day or night.

Once we introduce nocturnal animals, they are amazed that some animals sleep during the day!

Learning about day and night can provide a lot of hands-on activities, some of which I will be showing you in this post.

Learning About Day and Night with Preschoolers

A big part of our day and night activities is studying black and white.

We placed our favorite day and night books at our science table along with a black and white collage we made on canvas.

We asked our preschoolers to bring in a small item that was either black or white and we sorted them in the black and white bowls.

(If you are curious what else we put on this science table, you can find my big collection over here.)

Everything in our sensory bin was also black or white.

And, for art, more black and white!

Black and White Art

Oh how we love marble painting! Have you tried it yet? It is the ultimate process art activity.

We love marble painting because a lot of concentration is needed to carefully spoon the marbles into the box lid.

It’s super easy to set up.  Place paper into some sort of tray with edges. We love using box lids.

Golf balls can be used, too! We like to mix things up a bit.

It takes great concentration to spoon the marbles and golf balls into the box lid. Then, the box lid is tipped back and forth to move the marbles around. Noticing the paint’s tracks is so much fun!

The next day we did the same activity, except we used black paint on white paper.

Don’t you just love this bulletin board display?
