Inside: These cute chicks are a fun spring activity for toddlers that will also strengthen fine motor skills. Toddlers and preschoolers will love squeezing watercolors onto paper and then covering them with feathers and all the little details! It’s all about the process, but the end result is pretty cute, too.

One of our first spring activities is baby animals. We had bunnies and carrots in the dramatic play area, mother and baby animal matching in the science area, a bunny house in the dramatic play area, and these fun chicks at the art table.

You can see how we set up our classroom for this spring animal theme here!

When I was planning this activity, I wanted it to include using pipettes, since our 2 and 3 year olds have loved using them lately, and it’s a great pre-writing activity.

Then we added feathers and all the other little details and our chicks were created. I can’t wait to display them in our classroom!

What to use:

White paper cut into circles (or flattened round coffee filters)

Yellow liquid watercolors

Pipettes

Feathers (pick out the colors you want)

Orange paper scraps for beak and feet

Wiggly eyes

White glue

A solid piece of paper to glue everything on

The watercolor process:

Place the circles on a tray and pour the yellow liquid watercolors into a container, diluting it with water to desired strength.

Add the pipette.

Invite the children to squeeze the watercolors onto the circles.

Let dry. (We did this in 2 steps, so the watercolors were one day and the details were the next.)

Adding the details:

Glue the yellow painted circles onto a solid colored piece of paper.

Place the feathers in a container.

Invite the children to squeeze glue onto the yellow circles and then press the feathers on top.

Then add the eyes.

And then add the beak and feet.

What I love is that no 2 looked alike.

Each had their own personality, created by the artist.
