Inside: Looking for a simple math activity for fall? This apple counting activity works on 1:1 correspondence as the preschoolers add one apple eraser to each apple on the free printable page.
Fall is here, and that means putting together ideas to use with our apple theme! One of my new favorites is this apple counting activities for preschoolers.
The idea came to mind when I found the cutest little apple erasers. We have been working on one-to-one correspondence with our preschoolers, so I created a super simple printable that can be used with the apples.
What’s really nice about this activity is that it’s easy to set up. You could even keep everything in a busy bag for when you are out and about!
Apple Counting Activity for Preschoolers
What we used:
- Small apple erasers
- Apple numbers printable (scroll to bottom to download a copy for yourself)
- Red and green crayons
I introduced this preschool counting activity with apples during small groups time. That way I can give more undivided attention.
I placed the container of apple erasers at the table along with the printable. I had introduced our first one-to-one activity the prior week, so this wasn’t brand new. However, they still needed to be reminded to count the apples from left to right and not to randomly place apples wherever they wished.
Learning one-to-one correspondence is an important skill to learn in preschool. The instructions were to place one apple eraser on one apple on the printable.
We counted out loud as the apples were placed on the paper.
When they were finished, I asked them to place all the apple erasers back into the container.
Coloring the Apples
I instructed the preschoolers to color each apple, moving right to left, top to bottom. Again, their automatic response was to color the apples randomly, so we worked together to make sure we were moving down the page, from 1 to 5.
Next week we will put this activity at the table during our learning centers time, where they can work independently.

When you are a kindergarten teacher every time you have to find new and interesting ways to teach your kids, as these little ones get bored easily. Thanks for sharing this post with great idea.

You are very welcome. Happy you are here!

What a great way to use those little erasers. I have always seen them for sale but I know they aren’t the best at erasing so I never picked any up. Thank you for the idea.

I’ve tried several times to print the apple counting page. The numbers show up but not the apples! What’s wrong?

Hi Jana – I’ve emailed you the document.

Love this…thank you so much!
Jana
Hi again. I’m still unable to print the apple printable. I emailed what you sent me to a colleague and she was unable to print it. The numbers turn out great, but there are no apples. I would love to use the printable in my class.
