Inside: Get out the colorful tissue paper for this fun and easy toddler Valentine craft. These heart suncatchers bring color to your home or classroom when hung in the window. Free printable heart template included!

You know how it goes.

You are walking down the aisles in your local dollar store and you spot it.

You don’t know what you will do with it, but you just know it will be fun for something.

For me it was a package of clear plastic plates.

I know, right? How boring!

But not when you turn them into colorful heart suncatchers!

And this toddler valentine craft has transformed our classroom from the winter blahs to colorful fun. Just check out the last few photos to see!

Oh, and I’ve created a free heart template so you don’t even need to try to make your own. Scroll down this page to find it.

What you will need:

Clear plastic plates (I got 2 packs of 8 at the Dollar Tree, but you can get an idea here.)

  • Red yarn
  • White glue
  • Red or purple liquid watercolors
  • Red, purple, pink, white tissue paper squares

You can also add your choice of small shiny pieces, if desired.

Prepping this toddler valentine craft:

Use the free template (scroll down this page to find it) if desired.

Draw a heart on the plastic plate and cut it out. Make one for each child participating.

Use a hole punch to poke a hole at the top of the heart.

Thread a short piece of yarn through the hole and tie it.

Pour some glue into a shallow container and add a few drops of liquid watercolor.

Place on table with tissue paper squares and plastic heart.

Invitation to create:

Have your toddlers brush the colored glue onto the heart and then press the tissue paper on top.

We happened to have some small shiny pieces that we added as well.

Let them add as much as they desire, or until you can no longer see the plastic.

Since these are toddlers, chances are they won’t stick around long enough to cover the entire thing, but you never know!

Let thoroughly dry.

I used suction cup hooks to hang them in our classroom window.

They look so festive! Much needed with a winter with little color.

Love this idea. Were the plates hard to cut? Did you have to smooth the edges so they were not sharp?

Hi Sue – No, they really weren’t hard to cut! I just made sure not to have any sharp corners. I rounded the point of the heart just a tiny bit. No smoothing needed.
