Inside: This Way Up High in the Apple Tree circle time activity is a fun addition to the apple theme, and the use of props makes it more fun!

We love the apple theme and look forward to it every fall!

When putting together circle time activities for my two and three year olds, I decided to use visual props while singing Way Up High in the Apple Tree.

Not only do I have a prop to hold, but the children each have an apple prop to move around while singing!

Supplies

  • Way Up High In the Apple Tree Props from our shop (Tree and Five Numbered Apples)
  • Apple Props for Children to Hold (Freebie)
  • White Heavy (Cardstock) Paper
  • Velcro Tabs
  • Jumbo Craft Sticks
  • Laminator and Laminating Sheets
  • Wide Packing Tape
  • Optional: Way Up High In the Apple Tree Song

Preparation

Way Up High In the Apple Tree Props:

  • Make one copy on heavy paper and laminate for durability. (Laminating is optional, but I highly recommend it.)
  • Place five velcro tabs on the apple tree and also place velcro tabs on the backs of each apple. (Be mindful of the hook and loop so that the apples will actually attach to the tree.)
  • If you are going to place the entire thing on a felt board, put velcro on the back of the tree page as well.

Apple Props for the Children to Hold:

  • Make enough copies on cardstock so each child has a prop.
  • Laminate the apples for durability.
  • Use wide packing tape to stick apples to jumbo craft sticks.

Note: Holding props is optional, but it’s something I have found to be very helpful with younger children. When they have something of their own to hold, they tend to be more attentive. However, if your children are not used to holding props, or if the props become a distraction, you can opt not to use them.

The Activity

  • Place tree on felt board, if desired, and make sure all five apples are attached.
  • Hand each child an apple prop to hold.
  • Invite the children to help you count all five apples and then sing the song.
  • Either use a pre-recorded song or sing the song without music.
  • Have the children move their apples while singing.

Lyrics

Way up high in the apple tree,
Five red apples smiled at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could,
Dooowwwwwwwn came an apple,
Mmmm, it was good!

Count down until no apples are left on the tree.
