Valentine’s Heart Painting With Marbles

Inside: Valentine’s Heart Painting – Have you ever painted with marbles? That’s exactly what we did when each of our preschoolers made a Valentine’s heart. This is a classic method we use throughout the year, and it’s always loved!

Even the busiest preschooler will love making these hearts for Valentine’s Day!

The entire upper body is used to hold and then tip the box lid back and forth while the marbles make paint tracks all over the paper heart.

We’ve done active art activities in the past, such as our splat glove painting and our spin art hearts. Sitting is optional!

If you’ve got energetic preschoolers, make sure to check out our busy kids art collection that is perfect for their wiggly bodies.

What you will need:

  • Marbles (and/or golf balls – we used both)
  • Tempera paint
  • Paper cut into a heart shape
  • A tray with deep sides, or a box lid
  • Spoon

Setting it up:

Pour paint into tray and add marbles and a spoon. Place paper inside the tray or box lid.

Spoon marbles from paint, dropping them onto the paper. This takes great fine motor control, so you might need to first model how it is done. Remind your preschooler to move the spoon very slowly.

Then, hold both sides of the tray or box and gently rock it back and forth, moving the painted marbles across the paper.

Our preschoolers loved watching the paint tracks that the marbles left!

This can go on for as long as the child likes. When finished, remove the marbles from the container, and then remove the paper.
