.
We recently invited preschoolers between the ages of 2.5 and 5 to do a project with glue, salt, and watercolors on black paper.
.
.
For the older preschoolers, this was a great lesson in watching the colors blend as they traveled through the salt.
.
.
The 3 year olds loved squeezing the glue…
.
.
…and pouring course salt on it, before applying the watercolors. In fact, they were most involved with the glue and salt.
.
.
For the 2.5 year old, this was an exciting sensory experience. She dumped all the salt on the paper and then patted and swirled it.
.
.
She then took the watercolors and poured them from one container to another.
.
.
She was no longer interested in the painting project, but instead focused on transferring the watercolors.
I provided a tub to (hopefully) contain the liquid. I could see this was important work for her.
.
.
The rest of the class had gathered for circle time, but this young preschooler needed to finish her work, and then stack the cups.
.
.
And then, she looked up with me and smiled widely, and left to wash her hands, happy with her work. It’s the process, not the product, that matters most.

I just wanted to clarify about the project… they do this all while the glue is wet, correct? My preschoolers would love this, just want to make sure I’m doing it right. Thanks!
