Inside: This hanging rainbow art activity for toddlers is a fun way to work on color recognition while sorting collage pieces. When finished, display from the ceiling for a fun decoration!
I love getting our toddlers and preschoolers involved in group activities.
Especially those that end up with something we can display in our classroom, like this hanging toddler rainbow.
In the past we have made a giant color wheel to hang on our wall, so this time I wanted to try something on a smaller scale.
Something that could hang from the ceiling or in the window.
This rainbow art activity is a fun way to work on color recognition, too!

Before inviting our toddlers to make a rainbow, we became familiar with the colors by reading rainbow books at circle time.
Preparing this activity:
I used the centers of the paper plates that were leftover from our rainbow sun catcher activity.
Then I gathered some construction paper in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet and cut 2 circles out of each, the same size as the paper plate circles.
I glued the colored circles on both sides of the paper plate, since this will be visible from both sides.
I gathered small pieces of materials that were different colors of the rainbow and placed them on a tray.
Our toddlers were invited to match the colors of the materials to the colors of the circles.
Glue was squeezed onto the circles and the children started gluing the matching pieces on top.
I just love these playful, hands-on learning activities. They are especially perfect for this age group.
Oh, and don’t forget all the fine motor that takes place with these projects!
If you want to cover both sides, wait until one side is completely dry, then turn the circle over and put pieces on that side as well.
I used wire to attach the circles, creating holes with a hole punch first.
You can then hang it from your ceiling.
OR you can hang in your window. We tried both, and decided we liked it better in the window.
Such a fun way to learn the colors of the rainbow.
For preschoolers, add a bit more challenge by making a hanging rainbow using baubles!
This toddler rainbow activity was part of our rainbow theme.
