Inside: This easy handprint ornament can be filled with small pieces and given as a keepsake gift for the holidays!

Handprint crafts and ornaments are always popular when it comes to keepsakes.

I know that decades later I still enjoy pulling our kids’ handprint memories from the Christmas box.

Perhaps that’s why I love this handprint ornament.

Simply fill a clear ornament with your choice of small items and add something personal on the ornament, such as a handprint.

Each year we make a keepsake ornament, such as last year’s picture frame ornaments.

Years later, alumni parents share how special it is when they pull those ornaments out each Christmas, a sweet reminder of their children’s preschool years.

What you will need:

  • Clear glass ornaments
  • White acrylic paint
  • Small foam paint brush
  •  Any small items you choose to fill your ornament with

How we made handprint ornament a community activity:

A week or so prior to the event, we sent a note home asking each preschooler to bring 16 of the same small item.

This meant that each ornament would have 1 item from each child in our class. This made the activity be friend-oriented.

We were sharing, giving something to each other.

It went along nicely with a class motto “be a good friend”.

First, add a handprint to the ornament.

Brush your child’s hand with the acrylic paint and press it on the ornament, so that the hand wraps around it.

Allow to dry completely before filling.

We did the paint and filling on separate days.

Next, fill the ornament.

Remove the top from the ornament so it can be filled.

We placed the small items on paper plates (you can use any desired container).

Show your child how to walk around the table placing one item from each plate into the ornament.

(Note: We let them pinch several of the same item if there were more than 16, such as the stars and tiny foam pieces.)

When the ornament has been filled, replace the top.
