Rolling Eggs Easter Painting

Inside: Put together a rolling eggs Easter painting activity that includes lots of action as the paint gets moved around the paper egg!

You’ve probably heard of marble painting, right?

And even some golf ball painting, like when we made spider webs in October?

Okay, well how about painting with eggs?

And I don’t mean plastic eggs (although those are fun, too), but wood eggs?

Well, that’s exactly what our pre-k class did as an Easter painting activity and I got to step in and watch.

I loved all the action, the mixing of colors, and the result.

They made a colorful bulletin board display!

Rolling Eggs Easter Painting Activity

This egg painting activity uses egg-shaped paper (I have a free printable towards the bottom of this post), tempera paint, and wooden eggs. If you don’t have wooden eggs, feel free to use plastic eggs instead.

Ages

The children who created these eggs were four and five years old. However, our 3 and 4 year olds have done this as well. Toddlers have a harder time handling the sides of the box lid while also tipping it just enough to move the eggs without allowing the eggs to spill out of the box. Toddlers and younger preschoolers who don’t yet have the skills to handle the box lid can move the eggs around using a spoon. The eggs will still roll around, mixing in the paint.

Modifications/Extensions

Give toddlers and young preschoolers a spoon to move their eggs around rather than having them move the box lids back and forth.
For extra fine motor, give your older preschoolers scissors to cut out their own egg shape (using the printable).
Since plastic eggs can be easier to purchase than wooden eggs, you can use those instead.
If you do not have a box lid, you can use a rectangular plastic container (that is larger than the sheet of paper).
Remove the chairs if you’d prefer your children stand.

Supplies

Wood eggs
Tempera paint
Egg shaped paper (free printable below)
Box lid with sides (file box lids work best)
Plastic condiment squeeze bottles (if your paint is not already in squeezable bottles)
Scissors (for teachers or for students, depending on who is cutting out the eggs)

Preparation

Make sure paint is in squeezable bottles.

Download the egg printable (see below) and print it on to heavy (card stock) white paper, enough so that each child has at least one.

Have egg pages and box lids ready to go.

Set Up

If your children are cutting out their own eggs, first have them cut out their eggs.

If you are cutting out the eggs, make sure they are done before this point.

Place a box lid at each spot at the art table and place two eggs inside.

Invitation to Paint

Invite your children to come to the art table and place their paper egg in the cardboard, along with the wood eggs.

Squeeze desired colors on top of the egg paper.

This can be done by the teacher or the students.

If the children are squeezing the paint, make sure they don’t create a big puddle of paint. Remind them to move the bottle around as they squeeze so that the paint is distributed all around the egg.
