Classroom Interior Ideas

When one of my neighboring teachers added new interior ideas to her classroom, I was immediately in love with the transformation. She and I have visited several Reggio Emilia-influenced schools and took an online class from Fairy Dust Teaching. During this class, we had the opportunity to explore various classroom interiors that paid close attention to detail, using natural materials in warm earth tones. We started swapping primary colors and plastic furniture for soft, natural colors and furniture made from wood. We were hooked! While she transformed her classroom, I took notes and then changed our classroom as well. Let’s take a look at the details Susan added to her classroom.

I love the little displays throughout the room. The jewelry holder hung on the wall, used to show different collections, as well as the shadow box with more collections. Baskets filled with supplies. Bamboo runners on top of the shelves.

Even in the block area, your eye immediately notices the different textures. The smooth arches, the patterns in the baskets, the softness in the sheer curtains dividing the light table from the block area.

Susan added small lamps and turned off 1 set of the overhead lights to create a more peaceful environment. She took advantage of the large windows and added light sheer curtains to allow the light to filter through.

It’s all the little details that make this room feel more like a home rather than a classroom. What a transformation she has made in less than a week, and with a tight budget! Many of these items were found in our storage room and in her own home, as well as Goodwill.

My co-teacher and I have been doing our own classroom transformation, which I will share more later. The above picture shows how our dramatics area is coming along. You can see our transformation in this post.

Hi Sheryl, thank you so much for your most excellent blog! I will find out on Friday if I will be getting a new job teaching 2’s/3’s and I’ve been out of the loop for quite awhile. I can’t wait to go through your stuff on here.
