Inside: During the farm theme, try this toddler tractor painting activity. Young children love the action as they drive their tractors through paint!

Toddlers love the farm. Notice how many books and toys are related to the farm theme?

I like to add a farm theme in the fall, when many of my students have visited local farms for apples and pumpkins.

While there are a lot of farm crafts out there, I wanted process art with lots of action, since toddlers are busy!

We’ve had great success driving cars through paint, so why not tractors?

Tractors driving through mud on the farm!

That’s exactly what we did with my 2 and 3 year olds and they loved it.

Setting Up – Individual or Group Activity

Before preparing this activity, decide if you want it to be individual or group.

Individual

For an individual activity, you will want a tray for each child.

Set toy tractor in a shallow container of brown paint and place a sheet of paper on the tray.

Group

Cover the entire table with white paper, taping the edges to keep the paper from sliding off.

Have several big trays available, spread out on the table.

Squirt some brown tempera paint on each tray and add toy tractors.

The Activity

Invite children to the art table.

Tell them that they are going to drive the tractors through the “mud” and then on to the paper.

Notice the direction that the tractor is going – forwards, backwards, round and round.

When we did this with my two year olds, I also had tractor color pages from my transportation packet that were available.

I also added some paintbrushes for those that wanted to paint the tractors. (I love giving them options!)

Clean Up

We have a plastic dish tub in our sink that is used exclusively for soaking art supplies.

When the children are finished painting, I place everything in the tub, take it to the sink, and fill it with warm soapy water.
