Abstract Painting with Kids

Abstract painting with kids is really so simple and fun, and can be done with one child or a group of children. Preschoolers love to paint with just about anything – there are so many options besides paint brushes! In this art activity, we painted on the same canvas for 2 days, using different tools each time. In this particular activity we used a large piece of canvas, just like when we made our purple canvas art.

My co-teacher had a large blank canvas in her garage that never was used. (We love canvas art, but if you don’t have canvas, a large sheet of paper will work, too.)

On the first day, we used nesting cups to paint with. Some of the preschoolers stamped, while others slid, creating an interesting texture.

Everyone working on the same piece promotes a fun group experience. The preschoolers had to determine who was working where, how they could cross over and discover which areas hadn’t been painted yet.

The next day, we took out the same piece of canvas and invited the preschoolers to now stamp with utensils, right on top of what they did the previous day. This added some fun layers!

Simple. Fun. Definitely abstract!

What I appreciate about this project is that they can do it over a span of time. Each day they can add more!
