Inside: Your preschoolers will love this paper bag pumpkin art activity. Use them to create a pumpkin patch in your classroom!

Lately I have been trying to document what the other classes are doing in our preschool, so I decided to check out what the pre-k class was doing during their pumpkin theme. (The pre-k class is 4 and 4 year olds.)

Their teachers decided to put together an indoor pumpkin patch using paper bag pumpkin art made by the children.

You all know how much I love 3D art and there are a lot of benefits to it, so I loved seeing how they turned the bags into pumpkins!

If you are looking for a fun 3D pumpkin activity, look no further.

Plus, you might already have the materials on hand!

Paper Bag Pumpkin Art

There are lots of different pumpkin art activities out there. My class certainly has done it’s share, including:

  • Pumpkin Painting and Washing
  • Big Pumpkin Collage
  • Fine Motor Pumpkin Water Table

I’ve never done paper bag pumpkin art, however. Perhaps that’s why I wanted to observe the pre-k children creating these!

Watch the Video

Supplies

  • Paper bags
  • Orange tempera paint
  • Green tempera paint
  • Green chenille stems
  • Something to fill bags, such as newspaper or tissue paper

Preparation

The pre-k teachers stuffed the bags ahead of time with paper.

They then cut the green chenille stems into smaller pieces and tied them a few inches below the top of the bag for the stem.

The orange paint and the green paint were poured into separate containers, one for each child.

Write the child’s name on the bottom of the bag ahead of time as it’s much harder when the bags are wet with paint.

Set Up

Place the pumpkin bags on the art table, along with the paint.

Paint the Pumpkins!

Invite your students to paint the pumpkin orange and the stem green.

What I love about 3D art is that the children need to think about all of the sides.

Both hands are needed to hold the pumpkin, paint the pumpkin, turn the pumpkin.

Paint also needs to get into the crevices. Lots to think about!

Once the paper bag pumpkin is painted, it’s time to let them dry.

Make sure to read some pumpkin books with this activity!

  • The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin
  • It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse!
  • It’s Pumpkin Time!

And then you can display your pumpkin patch in the classroom!
