Inside: Simple Fall Art for Toddlers Using Cookie Cutters – Keep it Easy and Fun!

Are you at that point where you are realizing that your toddlers aren’t crazy for sitting at the art table? And if they do, it’s maybe 2 minutes tops?

I’ve written about this in my Art Tips for Toddlers post.

Well, this simple fall art activity using cookie cutters is another suggestion.

Toddlers don’t have to sit.

They aren’t confined to a small piece of paper.

They can make big motions.

Toddlers love to stamp paint onto paper. We’ve explored stamping in several ways, such as when we stamped squares using blocks and circles from paper tubes. There is something about taking an object and moving it up and down, over and over again. Our busy toddlers especially have fun with these types of activities. They love the motion!

AND they will stay focused for quiet awhile. That’s quite a bonus!

What you will need:

  • Fall cookie cutters
  • Tempera paint in fall colors
  • Trays for the paint
  • Large sheet of white paper

We have cookie cutters for every season and store them in our seasonal bags to use year after year. When I think of how many years we have used them, it’s really an affordable investment.

See that black plastic container holding the yellow paint? This is what we use as paint trays for many of our activities. Those frozen meals come in handy for these purposes! I think ours are about a decade old and going strong.

So, we placed a long sheet of white paper on our table with the trays of paint and cookie cutters and invited our two year olds to stamp.

Stamp, stamp, stamp. In the same place. Hmm…. the rest of the paper might not get covered at this point. But oh, the fun they are having!

Little hands gripping the cookie cutters as they hit the paper with color.

Well, it’s getting more covered!

And then, very quietly, the true spirit of our twos began…. cookie cutters were ditched and the hands got involved.

And then, a car appeared.

And another car.

It turned into a race track. Round and round the table they went, running the cars through the paint. The smiles!
Okay, so this will not be a Martha Stewart creation. But watching them as they worked together, running these cars around and around the table, I just smiled.

Fall stamping.
And then some hand prints.
And then car tracks.
I could have had held them back and only let them stamp with the cookie cutters. And they did have fun with that. But…. they added their own touch. And I love that.
