Inside: Strengthen fine motor skills with this easy shamrock art for toddlers and preschoolers. It’s as simple as dropping watercolors onto the free shamrock printable, squeezing and releasing the paint, watching it fall and mix. Hands-on fun!
I love activities that build multiple skills, and that’s exactly what this shamrock art activity does.
I took the same shamrock printable that I used in our fun and easy St. Patrick’s Day art, and also our shamrock color mixing activity.
We then used pipettes to squeeze the paint, building our fine motor skills.
As we dropped the paint, we watched what happened as it landed on the paper, building color recognition skills.
What was loved in this activity was the process. Squeezing and releasing over and over again as paint was transferred and dropped onto the paper.

Setting up this activity:
Pour liquid watercolors into containers and dilute a bit with water to desired strength.
Add pipettes to containers.
Place the shamrock printable on a tray or in a bin. (We used the side bins of our In and Out Activity Table.)
If using pipettes is new to your toddlers and preschoolers, take some time to show them how to dip it into the paint, squeeze bulb, move the pipette over the paper, and release.
It can take some time getting this motion down. Since our children have been using them for a few months, they now understand how to use the pipettes. But it did take some time.
Our children will do this activity for quite awhile because they love the action that takes place.
It’s especially nice for busy toddlers who normally don’t like to sit and focus for more than a few minutes.
Ask your children what colors they see as they are dropping the paint onto the paper. In this case, ours realized that the blue and yellow were making green.
And that’s all there is to this simple yet fun shamrock art!
You can leave it as is, or cut them out for a fun bulletin board display.
