Inside: Preschool Sunflower Science

We love learning about sunflowers, and explore them twice a year.  In the spring we plant sunflower seeds and let them sit on our science shelf, enjoying the sun from the window. Our preschoolers then take them home to plant in their gardens. I love the photos our parents send us during the summer, showing how tall they are growing! (We plant mammoth sunflowers.) In the fall, our families cut down their sunflowers and bring them to class so we can explore their seeds. We love these types of hands-on science explorations!

This particular year one of our preschool families brought the entire plant into our classroom. It was huge! We placed it right on the floor and let the preschoolers explore.

We got out our tweezers, some cups and trays, and let them go to work pulling the seeds from the plant.

The teacher in me was delighted to see them strengthening their fine motor skills!

For those who found the tweezers a challenge, we provided tongs. Both tweezers and tongs are used often in our classroom.

And then, some of the preschoolers dropped all tools and simply used their fingers.

Each child in both of our classes decorated a petal and we all worked on the black centers of these sunflowers. This is one of my favorite bulletin boards!

What a treat to have the big Sunflower for the kids to get some hands on experience. Sounds like some fun stuff!
