Inside: Kids will love this fun preschool Independence Day art activity. It’s action art that involves dropping paint onto stars and keeps kids moving!
If you haven’t tried the splatter paint technique yet, you are in for a real treat!
It can be done year-round, changing out the colors of the paint and shapes of paper.
For this particular activity, we were going with a 4th of July theme, so we used white stars with red and blue paint.
Glitter and small stars were added to give it even more of a patriotic look!
Fun Independence Day Art with Painted Stars
What we used:
- Rubber gloves, filled with dried peas, rice, or beans and tied with a knot (so they are securely closed)
- White card stock paper, cut into stars
- Red tempera paint
- Blue tempera paint
- Box or some sort of container with sides
Putting together this Independence Day art:
Pour the paint onto trays and add one filled glove for each tray.
Place the star in the container or box.
Stand above the container and drop the glove so that it lands in the container and hopefully on top of the star.
Pick up the glove and remove it from the container.
Then, do it again.
In fact, our children wanted to do it many times!
You can even have the children stand on a step stool so that the paint-loaded glove has further to go.
You can then add some glitter and star confetti.
And while I know process art doesn’t need to look “pretty” when it’s finished, can I just say that these were? They were awesome!
And that’s all there is to this Independence Day art!
It would be perfect for your summer camp, with the neighborhood kids, or at the kitchen table with your family.

The splatter paint method that was used in this 4th of July activity is part of a new book called Action Art.
When I received my copy of Action Art, written by MaryAnn Kohl and Barbara Zaborowski, I just knew we would be able to put it to good use in our classroom.
When I was a new teacher, searching for books in the library for art activities, I found MaryAnn’s books. The very first book I checked out was Preschool Art. I was drawn to process art and knew this was what I wanted for my toddlers and preschoolers.
At parent night I let the parents know of the importance of process art. They learn that I am not a fan of cookie cutter art, that I will expose their children to activities that will allow them to explore and add their own touches. Throughout the year I send home slideshows showing them the steps of our process art. They see their children engaged. They see their children exploring. They see their children learning as they try new ideas.
Action Art is filled with process art for children ages 2 to 12 with lots of movement added. As soon as I received my copy, I sat down and flipped through the pages. I planned on looking at every activity from cover to cover to select our first action art idea.
