Each Christmas our toddlers and preschoolers make at least one keepsake ornament that I hope their families will cherish year after year. Picture ornaments are easy for kids to make, so we include one in our collection most years. To keep them from being too crafty, provide an assortment of small materials and let them choose what they would like to place on the frame. Wrap them up, and they make a special gift.
What you will need for picture frame ornaments:
Some type of unfinished wood frame ornament that a small photo can be inserted into. I’ve found ours at Michael’s Craft Stores, and also Discount School Supply.
How we have painted our ornaments:
For our preschoolers, I like to add an extra fine motor challenge by using a pipette to apply liquid watercolors.
Apply paint to frame.
Adding embellishments after the paint is dry:
Finishing the ornament:
Add a photo of the child and wrap. That’s it!
Some fun Christmas books to go with this activity:
Make sure to wrap your child’s gift in a handmade gift bag!
