Easy Thanksgiving Necklace for Kids

For a decade or so I’ve had our preschoolers make necklaces to wear at our Thanksgiving feast. This easy Thanksgiving necklace for kids involves simple counting, like with our ladybug craft. I cut an egg carton so that there were 5 cups, one for each piece of macaroni to be strung on the necklace. Not only is this a great counting activity, but also 1:1 correspondence. Of course, what the preschoolers love is the threading, as it is one of their favorite fine motor activities. When they are finished threading the 5 macaroni pieces, we make it into a necklace!

What we used for our easy Thanksgiving necklaces:

Dyed pieces of dry macaroni

Tray with dividers or marked sections, 1-10

Threading yarn with tips

Empty egg carton, cut so that it has 5 cups

Setting up this activity:

Write numbers 1 – 5 in the egg carton’s cups. Place 1 macaroni in each cup, or have the child do this for extra counting fun.

Add a piece of tape to one of the ends to label the child’s name and also to keep the macaroni from slipping off while being threaded.

Making these easy Thanksgiving necklaces:

Show the child how to use the non-dominant hand (helper hand, a we call it) to hold the tip of the yarn while using the dominant hand (worker hand) to pick up and thread the macaroni.

When all 5 pieces are threaded, count to make sure all 5 are there.
