Color mixing art is a fun sensory paint activity for children. For those of you who have been reading my posts on Teaching 2 and 3 Year Olds, you know I love to invite my preschoolers to get their hands into their work! Some are more eager than others, but I’ve found that by regularly setting out activities that encourage the hands to become involved, eventually most feel comfortable.

Color mixing art materials:

  • tempera cakes
  • a safety mirror (or a tray, if you do not have a mirror)
  • paper
  • cups of water

The process:

I set out cups of water that they could mix onto a mirrored surface and the hands got to work!

I noticed the handprints sticking to the surface of the mirror.

I decided to place paper beside the mirrored tray.

The color mixing continued moving from the mirrored tray to the paper, many times.

We then stood the mirror against the building to look at the light reflecting through the colors.
