Inside: This Christmas color sorting activity is super easy to set up, and it’s a fun way to work on fine motor skills with toddlers and preschoolers!

We love using jingle bells in December, as I shared when we used them for painting.

Actually, we use them all over our classroom!

Our love for jingle bells starts when we add Christmas music to our day. We give each child wrist jingle bells and they shake them to the beat of the music.

So, when we then add them to other classroom activities, they cannot wait to become engaged!

One of these fun activities is Christmas color sorting using jingle bells. It’s a bit of color recognition, fine motor strengthening, and science all mixed into one!

This Christmas color sorting activity is super easy to set up, and it's a fun way to work on fine motor skills with toddlers and preschoolers!

Christmas Color Sorting Activity Using Jingle Bells

Here is what we used for our preschoolers:

  • Jingle bells in a variety of colors that matched our color sorting bowls
  • Magnets

We placed our bowls on a table along with the bells and the magnets.

The first thing our preschoolers noticed was how the bells stuck to the magnet. The look on their faces when they realize this is priceless. Huge smiles!

Then, they realized that if they lifted the magnet, the bells stayed on it.

What happens when you use 2 magnets?

And then, we got to the color sorting. As the bells were transferred with the magnet, they were placed into the matching bowls.

Here is what we used for our toddlers:

  • Jumbo jingle bells in a variety of colors that matched our color sorting bowls
  • Magnets

We simplified this activity by removing the color bowls and the smaller bells.

At this age, what they loved most was being able to pick up the bells with the magnets. We even added some vintage bells that a retired teacher gave us years ago.
