Preschool Ocean Theme Activities

Our last theme of the school year is the ocean. Of course, the best way to teach this would be to actually take them TO the beach, but it’s not close enough for us. Plus, our families are fortunate to visit the coast, making our preschool ocean theme that much more meaningful. This collection of preschool ocean theme activities are fun and engaging!

What I love about this theme is that there are so many fun ways to study shells and ocean animals! From the science table, to the art center, inside the sensory bin, on top of the light table, and in the books we read.

Here’s some of our favorites!

Preschool Ocean Theme Activities

During our morning meeting I like to introduce what we will be doing that day.

I read an ocean book and then brought out my basket of assorted shells. We noticed how they had different textures.

Group meetings are perfect for passing objects around, so we carefully passed the shells from one friend to the other, running our fingers across them.

Shells at the Playdough Table

My co-teacher made this playdough that same morning, so it was still warm. You can just feel it now, right? It was quite relaxing, and I’m sure that’s a big reason why all 6 chairs at the table were occupied much of centers time.

We provided rolling pins to roll the dough flat, and small shells to poke into the dough.

Shells at the Light Table

Oh, how we love our light table! While it’s fun as a surface for small world play and construction, it’s also perfect for exploring. The light highlighted the details of the shells, making them so inviting to touch.

Shells at the Science Table

Long ago, as a new teacher, I had made these colored paper starfish and had them laminated. It was for some circle time activity, I am quite sure (oh, my poor memory), but I thought they’d be fun at the science table. I also included a photograph of shells, a display of shells, and a couple of ocean discovery bottles.

preschool ocean theme

Our toddlers and preschoolers love to explore at this small round table. It’s a perfect size for 1, 2, or maybe even 3 children. There is a shelf under the table to store books. I have no idea where this table was originally purchased. My co-teacher’s mom found it at a local Goodwill, along with 2 chairs. Score!

Of course, a shell must be put against the ear to “hear the ocean”!

You can read all about this art activity here. Not only were they fun to make, but they also looked lovely hanging from our classroom ceiling.

I found these small fish aquarium nets and added aquarium gravel and sea animals. You can read all about it here.

Beach Day

The grand finale of our ocean theme was beach day with our preschoolers. They wore beach attire to school and brought their towels. We played beach music, made ice cream, and were so happy the sun was actually shining that day. Because, where we live, that’s not often the case in May.

We also tie this in with our day and night theme, having a pajama day. I’ve put together this collection of hibernation activities, crafts, snacks, songs and books that you can use in your preschool classroom or homeschool.

25 Favorite Preschool Learning Themes

Are you like I was, searching for themes that will work with preschoolers? Do you have stacks of notes with ideas but not sure where to go next? Take a deep breath. I am hoping to help you with this collection of 25 favorite preschool learning themes.

I have searched for the “perfect” preschool themes. I’ve redone our curriculum so many times during the 15+ years I’ve taught 3 year olds. Remember I had the same issue with our preschool classroom schedule? It’s HARD. But, dear teachers,  I bet you know this. That’s why you are searching.

The collection of preschool curriculum ideas I’m about to share has been used for several years now, and we love it. You could move some of the themes around a bit and it will still be effective. Or, if there’s a particular theme you really want to use that’s not in this list, just substitute one of my suggestions for that one.

Note: We usually do a different theme every week or every 2 weeks. However, if we see that the preschoolers are really into a particular theme, we will stay with it another week.

Please click on the photo for activities. The themes with no pictures means I have not created posts about them yet. (But, believe me, I’m working on it!)

Gingerbread Theme Ideas for Toddlers and Preschoolers

The gingerbread theme is one of my favorites, and our toddlers and preschoolers love all the activities provided. After reading several versions of The Gingerbread Man/Boy/Girl, we put together several gingerbread dramatic play ideas in our classroom. During the same time, we create gingerbread art activities, use gingerbread mats at the playdough table, and provide gingerbread matching games for the children to enjoy. Here is a collection of gingerbread theme ideas for toddlers and preschoolers. Enjoy!

Gingerbread Dramatic Play

Each year we seem to find more gingerbread items to add to our dramatic play area. This year my co-teacher’s mother found these stuffed gingerbread people at Goodwill. They were adored by our toddlers and preschoolers! They carried them on trays to serve to all their classmates. Oh, and to their teachers, too.

We also added our Christmas slice and bake cookies that I found on Amazon last year. (Seriously, this is worth every penny. It is loved THAT much. And it doesn’t have to be limited to Christmas. Kids would have fun with it year round!)

Manners were practiced as the children asked if we wanted a gingerbread cookie.

Preschoool Gingerbread
We begin each December with a gingerbread theme.
One of our preschool literacy favorites is The Gingerbread Man. The children love hearing about the cookie that jumped out of the oven and will re-enact it for several days (even weeks) after it is read…

We began our gingerbread unit by reading the classic gingerbread story.

As I read it, all eyes were focused on the book as we waited to see what happens to this cookie that runs away. In the following days, I read several other gingerbread books.
Here are some of the versions we enjoy:
(Note: These are affiliate links from Amazon. When you click on an image or link and purchase from Amazon, you are supporting my website. Thank you!)

During our gingerbread theme, we made ornaments.

We used air dry clay so we wouldn’t need to bake them in the oven. They dry nice and hard, perfect for ornaments!
While the clay was still wet, we added buttons and googly eyes.

After applying clear acrylic spray, they were ready.

Meanwhile, we set up a gingerbread shop in the dramatics corner.
I found this cute gingerbread printable from Pre-Kinders. I’ve used it for several different activities, especially matching. I just use a dry erase marker for whatever symbols I want the children to match. However, in this case, I decided to add them to our dramatics corner. After reading several versions of The Gingerbread Boy, the preschoolers had fun pretending one of the cookies jumped out of the oven and ran away.
I had the little green and red gingerbread men at the manipulatives table along with some pattern cards, but they ended up in the dramatics area. Love the 1:1 correspondence going on here! I found quite a few other ideas I could have done with these little guys, similar to what Vanessa from Pre-K Pages does in her gingerbread unit.
Our writing table had pictures of gingerbread men to color and adorn with stickers.
You can find a similar color page to print here.
We had fun making gingerbread out of cookie cutters. Next time we will make this gingerbread play dough from Mom to 2 Post Divas.
Our little wooden oven is never far from the play dough table, especially in the 2s class. They loved pretending their play dough gingerbread cookies were real!
There are so many different activities that go with this theme. We truly could be busy for weeks with this book!

Fun Butterfly Craft for Preschoolers

Every spring we love putting together a fun butterfly craft for preschoolers. We order our caterpillars and they arrive after spring break. This is a highlight every year!

We read books about how caterpillars turn into butterflies, we explore the butterfly life cycle on our science shelf, and we make butterfly art!

For this particular art activity, we wanted to add lots of fine motor opportunities. We included painting, squeezing, twisting, and threading! It took several days, but our preschoolers loved every step.

Fun Butterfly Craft for Preschoolers

When our caterpillars arrive after spring break, we begin our butterfly art. I love this time of year, when the temperatures are warming and our backyard friends are starting to visit.
Before beginning this butterfly craft, we read some butterfly books.

What you will need:

  • Wooden dowels
  • Commercial-sized coffee filters
  • Pipe Cleaners (Chenille Stems)
  • Liquid Watercolors
  • Pony Beads
  • Tempera paint for the dowels

Preschool Butterfly Theme

After observing our caterpillars and learning how they will turn into butterflies, we first make caterpillars. Then, it’s time to make our big butterflies!

First, paint the dowels.

Paint the wooden dowels with tempera paint and let them dry.

Preschool Butterfly Theme

Then, paint the coffee filters.

Dilute your liquid watercolors with water and brush them onto the coffee filters.

Preschool Butterfly Theme
Preschool Butterfly Theme

Assemble the butterflies.

Once the coffee filters are dry, scrunch the centers and loop a pipe cleaner around it and attach to the painted dowel. Twist another pipe cleaner around the top of the dowel.

Provide a container of pony beads and invite the children to thread them onto the pipe cleaners at the top of the dowels. These will be the antennae.

Preschool Butterfly Theme
Then twist the remaining pipe cleaners.

Now we have our big, beautiful butterflies!
