Teaching 2 and 3 Year Olds: Marble-Painted Hearts
Marble painting is loved by my preschoolers every year, so I decided to add some doily hearts for our Valentines theme…

Place paint in a tray with a spoon and marbles. (Note: If you are working with children under 3, you can substitute golf balls for marbles.)

We have a stash of cardboard box lids that are used for activities like this. They help contain the marbles. (Well, sometimes, as you will see shortly.)

The paint-covered marbles are spooned into the box lid. This is a wonderful fine motor and hand-eye coordination activity!

Once the marbles are in the box lid, the preschooler will lift and rock it back and forth so that the marbles move and create paint tracks.

And yes, if the box is tipped a bit too much, a marble or two might escape….

But look how pretty this is! The marbles have left tracks across the paper.

When finished, plop the marbles into a colander and rinse. Easy peasy!

I hung ours in the window because I loved the light shining through the holes.

Marble-painted doily hearts. Happy Valentines!

  1. These are so beautiful and it’s hard to believe that such young children made them. I will be sure to do this one with my 2 year old. Thanks for sharing Sheryl, I’ll be posting this on my FB page soon. :)

    • Thank you, Kate! Yep, 100% made by 2 year olds. It took a bit of coordination to learn how to hold the box lid in both hands and gently tip it to and from, but once they got the hang of it, they handled it fine!

  2. How fun, what a great craft!

  3. What fun and I love how they came out! Thank you for sharing at Sharing Saturday!
