Teaching 2 and 3 Year Olds: Exploring Colors in Preschool
Exploring colors happens in all areas of our classroom, throughout our day…

Here are some ways we have explored colors:

In the sensory table:
Color Activities
We added pom poms, color coded containers, and tongs (to work those fine motor muscles).

At the art table:

This was a favorite!  Rainbows from bubble wrap on rolling pins.
You can read more about it here.

We started a new project this school year: creating a canvas for each color of the rainbow. I so prefer the children’s work rather than commercial posters. I can’t wait for this color wall to be completed!
You can see how we made the purple canvas here.
At the fine motor table:
We stuck colored squares to sticky paper and hung them in the window. You can see the process here.

Writing Table:

How about sorting your writing tools by color?

Table Activities:

Putting pom poms down the matching chute. We painted paper tubes and taped them to a piece of acrylic.
Individual Tray Work:

Using a strawberry huller to transfer small pony beads to the matching container.

Science:

We placed anything yellow we found around the room to this try for a color exploration. We make sure to have magnifying glasses handy.

Dramatics:

How about some rainbow skirts? You can see how we made these easy no-sew tulle skirts here.

Circle Time:

We like to use circle time to teach concepts, including colors. In this activity, each child was given a feather and he/she placed it on the matching turkey.

In this activity, I gave each child a colored shape to place in the matching bowl. You can see more here.

Small Groups:

We end each day with small groups. Each group has 4 children and we work on many skills,  including colors.

  4. Lucy is just diving into the awesome world of learning colours! I love all the ideas in the post and it has inspired me to set up colour-specific trays and make some of those awesome colour collages with my littlies! You’re such a wealth of information! Thank you so much for sharing!

  5. What a wonderful collection of hand-on color activities. We have done pony beads on pipe cleaners before, but we have always used a cheese shaker for the pipe cleaners. I love the idea of putting them in the egg carton.
I would love for you to stop by and share on my weekly Toddler Idea Tuesday Linky. I feature several posts each week from those who link up with a link back to the original blog.
