As we start a new year, I thought I’d compile some play dough ideas from 2013…

Setting the play dough table:
We usually place our tools in wicker baskets in the center of the table. At the beginning of the year, we laminate neutral-colored construction paper that defines each work space. They are easy to wipe clean and store on a shelf. We store our play dough in an air tight container (either a Tupperware-style container or a sealable plastic bag).
Some of our favorite tools:
One of our favorites is a plastic “pizza cutter”.
Hammers are a great addition, too.
We’ve added bears and all sorts of plastic animals to our play dough table.
Candles and cupcake toppers are always a favorite.
Feathers were a nice addition in November!
Something new we tried last winter was adding flicker candles. These especially looked nice with our vanilla sparkly play dough.
Straws, craft matchsticks, and craft sticks are a fun addition for poking into the play dough.
Play dough is the perfect consistency for making impressions. We’ve taken pieces from toys, nature materials, glass gems …. the possibilities are endless!
Another something new that we tried this year: adding stamps to our play dough.
How about some construction vehicles?
Adding some math and literacy:
We’ve added both foam letters and foam numbers to our play dough table. Preschoolers love to recognize letters in their names and the numbers of their ages!
Letter and number cookie cutters are fun because they can be cut out of the play dough.
Enjoying Play Dough Each Season
Last fall we added Indian corn to the play dough table for the first time. The children rolled the corn in the dough to make imprints.
We made gingerbread play dough cookies during our Christmas theme.
We also love to add some sparkle to our holiday play dough.
In the spring we add herbs, such as lavender that the preschoolers crush.
We also added basil and other herbs to the play dough table that the children could cut with scissors and add.
